When ShopGoodwill Closes Auctions Early

Quick Answer: ShopGoodwill can close an auction on their backend before the listed Pacific end time still showing on the page. BidPulse has logged 105 such cases since April 2026, with new ones every month through October. In 72 recent snipes with clean fire-time measurement, every case had at least 6.5 seconds still on the listed clock when ShopGoodwill returned Auction has closed. It is platform timing, not an outbid and not a late snipe.

The countdown still has seconds left. Your max bid is ready. Then you lose, and the final price is below what you were willing to pay.

If you use a sniper or watch auctions closely, this moment is confusing. You were not outbid. You did not miss the window on purpose. ShopGoodwill simply stopped accepting bids before the listed end time.

Most shoppers never hear about this. We see it in production snipe data every week, and we have timestamped logs going back to April 2026. This is not a new ShopGoodwill bug from last month. It is a long-running platform behavior we started tracking in detail that spring.

What you see vs what ShopGoodwill does

On the listing page, ShopGoodwill shows an end time in Pacific Time and a countdown. You reasonably assume the auction stays open until that clock hits zero.

Behind the scenes, a separate close process decides when bids stop. When that process has already shut the auction, PlaceBid returns a message like “Auction has closed” even though the page timer has not finished.

That is not a display lag you can refresh away. The bid API and the countdown are not perfectly synchronized.

How long we have been seeing this

Every early-close snipe in BidPulse carries a timestamp. The first one in our logs is April 15, 2026. The most recent at the time of writing is October 6, 2026. In between, we logged cases in every single month without a gap.

Month Early-close snipes logged
Apr 2026 9
May 2026 9
Jun 2026 6
Jul 2026 7
Aug 2026 29
Sep 2026 35
Oct 2026 10 (partial month)

105 total cases across 15 shoppers in that window. August and September show higher counts partly because BidPulse traffic grew and partly because we began storing a dedicated closed_early status with a close_delta_seconds field for cleaner analysis. The underlying ShopGoodwill behavior was already present in April; we just got better at naming and measuring it.

Real data: listed end vs when our snipe fired

BidPulse schedules snipes six seconds before the listed end time. When ShopGoodwill rejects the bid as already closed, we record how many seconds were still on the listed clock at fire time. That number is a floor: ShopGoodwill had closed at least that many seconds before the time on the listing. They may have closed even earlier; we only know they were closed when our bid arrived.

For the 72 most recent snipes with clean fire-time measurement (August through October 2026):

Aggregate Value
Share of all terminal snipe outcomes (Aug–Oct) 0.97% (~1 in 100)
Distinct shoppers affected (all 105 cases) 15
Seconds still on listed clock at fire 6.5 to 7.8 (average 6.9)
Cases with at least 6.5 seconds left 100%

Below are nine anonymized examples spanning April through October. Times are Pacific, matching ShopGoodwill listings.

Shopper Date Listed end (PT) Snipe fire (PT) Sec still on clock % of final minute Max bid Result
Shopper I Apr 16, 2026 Apr 16, 7:12 PM Apr 16, 7:11:51 PM 8.7 14.5% $16.01 SGW already closed
Shopper C Aug 18, 2026 Aug 18, 6:30 PM Aug 18, 6:29:52 PM 7.8 13.0% $21.99 SGW already closed
Shopper D Sep 1, 2026 Sep 1, 3:50 PM Sep 1, 3:49:53 PM 6.8 11.3% $61 SGW already closed
Shopper G Sep 12, 2026 Sep 12, 6:33 PM Sep 12, 6:32:52 PM 7.1 11.9% $148 SGW already closed
Shopper A Sep 21, 2026 Sep 21, 6:54 PM Sep 21, 6:53:52 PM 7.3 12.2% $126 SGW already closed
Shopper F Sep 21, 2026 Sep 21, 6:07 PM Sep 21, 6:06:53 PM 6.9 11.5% $154 SGW already closed
Shopper E Sep 22, 2026 Sep 22, 7:30 PM Sep 22, 7:29:52 PM 7.0 11.7% $125 SGW already closed
Shopper H Sep 29, 2026 Sep 29, 6:07 PM Sep 29, 6:06:53 PM 6.7 11.2% $21.69 SGW already closed
Shopper B Sep 30, 2026 Sep 30, 6:02 PM Sep 30, 6:01:53 PM 6.7 11.2% $138 SGW already closed

The % of final minute column puts the gap in plain terms: ShopGoodwill had already closed with about 11 to 13 percent of the last 60 seconds still showing on the clock.

How we measure this

We record the timestamp when the snipe fires, not when ShopGoodwill’s response comes back. The API round trip can take several seconds. Measuring at response time would make it look like we fired after the listed end, which is misleading. Fire-time measurement is why every row above shows a positive number of seconds still on the clock.

The mechanics, step by step

  1. You set a max bid. BidPulse arms a timer for six seconds before the listed Pacific endTime.
  2. The timer fires on schedule. Our server sends PlaceBid to ShopGoodwill.
  3. ShopGoodwill rejects the bid. The API returns that the auction has closed.
  4. BidPulse classifies the outcome as closed_early. This is separate from outbid, lost, or a generic failure. We store how many seconds remained on the listed clock at fire time for analysis.
  5. You get a specific notification. The title is “Auction Closed Early” with copy that ShopGoodwill closed before your snipe could land. This was not an outbid.

What it feels like as a shopper

On ShopGoodwill: The countdown may still be running. The final price can sit below your max. There is no outbid animation that explains what happened.

In BidPulse: The auction shows as closed early, not as a normal loss to a higher bidder. Email and in-app alerts use the early-close wording so you do not chase a competitor who never existed.

On trial: closed_early does not consume one of your three trial snipes. ShopGoodwill closed before the bid could count.

On a paid plan: A fired snipe still counts as used even when ShopGoodwill had already closed. You got a real attempt at the scheduled second; the platform blocked it.

When several early closes cluster in a short window, we may flag ShopGoodwill status as degraded so you know the pattern is on ShopGoodwill’s side, not a widespread BidPulse outage.

What you cannot fix (and what we already optimize)

You cannot place a bid after ShopGoodwill’s backend close, no matter how high your max is.

Firing earlier is not a free fix. Every extra second gives human bidders more room to react to proxy movement. BidPulse already uses a six-second lead based on production timing data. Pushing much earlier trades away the last-second edge that sniping is for.

Network blips at the edge are a separate problem. If the first PlaceBid attempt stalls and the retry backoff eats the last second before nominal close, you can lose a winnable auction even when ShopGoodwill’s close timing was normal. We shorten retry delay in the final few seconds before listed close so a second attempt can still land. That helps transport failures; it does not override ShopGoodwill closing six seconds early.

How rare is this, really?

About one percent of snipe outcomes in our recent data. That is small in the aggregate and large when it happens on an item you wanted.

It is also not proof that every ShopGoodwill auction ends early. Most snipes end in a normal win, loss, or outbid at or near the listed time. Early close is a distinct, trackable edge case that has shown up steadily since we first logged it in April 2026, not a one-week anomaly.

Practical takeaways

  1. If you lose with seconds on the clock and no outbid story, suspect early close. Check your BidPulse notification wording before you assume your sniper was late.
  2. Do not raise your max to solve it. The auction was already closed to new bids.
  3. Watch ShopGoodwill status during peak hours if you see multiple early closes in one evening. Clusters are worth knowing about.

Bottom line

ShopGoodwill can close auctions before the listed end time still showing on the page. BidPulse has 105 timestamped cases since April 2026, with new ones every month. In every recent case we measured precisely, ShopGoodwill had already closed with at least six to eight seconds left on the listed clock when our on-time snipe arrived.

That is platform behavior. It is not you misreading the timer, and it is not someone outbidding you at the last second. Knowing the pattern saves a lot of frustration the first time it happens to you.
